Bambu

Bambu was established in 2003, and its goal has always been to reduce our use and reliance on plastic by providing people with beautiful, non-toxic products made from nature. Both Jeff & Rachel, the founders of bambu, were born in Portland, Oregon – a place that prides itself on local, homegrown and eco-friendly values. When they were relocated to China for work, a place often criticised for its manufacturing processes, they took these values with them. They wanted to see if they could find a way of doing things differently – creating interest and excitement in sustainable materials, whilst adhering to ethical business practices.

Today the bambu team continues to focus on the same key values. They source materials locally, work with people who work with their hands, and produce safe and durable products that will last for years. The primary material they work with is bamboo – an endlessly renewable resource that grows very fast without the need for pesticides or fertilisers – and they also work with other sustainable materials such as cork and organic cotton. All bambu products are certified as USDA 100% Biobased, confirming that they are made from natural raw materials.

Bambu cutting boards and serveware are made from 100% organic bamboo, laminated with food safe E0 adhesive. The bamboo comes from sustainably sourced and certified forests. Bambu utensils are made with 100% certified organic bamboo, certified by LETIS. All products are finished with an organic, food safe plant-based finishing oil.

For bambu sustainability goes beyond the balance between what they take from the earth and what they return to it. It is central to how they conduct themselves as a business. They are committed to 3rd party certification and testing, promote fair labour practices and safe working conditions and ‘green’ their supply chain. It is a certified B Corp – a community of businesses that balance purpose and profit. Bambu is also a certified member of the Compost Manufacturing Alliance (CMA), maintaining a high standard of compost quality at facilities throughout the U.S.  The CMA also provides field testing to ensure products are truly compostable.
