We are the sole distributor in Europe for The Leakey Collection - a range of contemporary fair trade jewellery made from grass.
The Leakey Collection includes the popular Zulugrass and Zulusport ranges as well as coordinating porcelain pendants and stylish wooden jewellery made from fallen wood. All the products are made by the Maasai women in Kenya providing much-needed employment in this remote area of Africa.
Zulugrass is a unique and versatile type of jewellery. Each strand contains vibrantly dyed grass combined with sparkling hand blown Czech glass beads - all threaded onto a strong elasticated thread. The single strands can be worn as a bracelet, necklace, anklet or even a hair band and work individually or twisted together with one of the other 99 colours available. Readymade necklaces, bracelets and earrings are also available.
The Zulusport range has been introduced to offer a fun and sporty alternative to the Zulugrass. Sold as simple bracelets and necklaces with optional little charms attached. Great on its own or worn together with Zulugrass.
Katy and Philip Leakey came up with the idea for Zulugrass after seeing the effect of the 2001 severe drought on the people of the Kenyan bush, where they live. They wanted to help the local community by providing work opportunities without interfering with local culture, and so came up with an idea that would utilise both an abundant natural resource and the traditional jewellery-making skills of the Maasai women. The Massai women like to work with the freedom to come and go as their lives dictate so the work is offered in non-factory settings at "nomadic" work stations which span over 150 miles in the Rift Valley in Kenya. Each woman can choose to work when she wants to, and is paid by the piece. They now provide work for more than 1,000 Maasai women during peak seasons.
They support fair trade practices, and have been granted the Co-Op America Seal of Approval. www.coopamerica.org
